Where I work.

Gravesend and Northfleet, and the villages around the edge of the borough: Higham, Chalk, Shorne, Cobham, Meopham, Istead Rise, Singlewell. 23 conservation areas across the borough, one river.

Gravesend town

The historic core, DA11, sits on the Thames. Windmill Hill on the north side of town is the high point that gives the town its shelter, and it is its own conservation area, along with Darnley Road, Harmer Street, King Street, Milton Place, Overcliffe and Pelham Road nearer the centre. Victorian and Edwardian terraces predominate, dense street-front hedges and small back gardens.

Northfleet

Immediately west of Gravesend, DA11, historically distinct but now effectively contiguous with it. The Hill and Lansdowne Square are the borough's designated conservation areas here. Older housing stock, and more field-hedge boundaries at the inland edge towards Northfleet Green.

Higham, Chalk and Shorne

Villages east and south-east of Gravesend, DA12. Higham has its own conservation area around Church Street and Lower Higham, and is the village nearest Gad's Hill Place, where Charles Dickens lived and wrote. Chalk and Shorne (with its own conservation area, plus Queens Farm and Thong) sit further along the same stretch. More hedgerow-style boundaries out here than the tight town terraces.

Cobham and Meopham

Cobham, DA12, is a conservation area in its own right, an estate village around Cobham Hall. Meopham, further south, has three separate conservation areas (Hook Green, Meopham Green, Meopham The Street) covering its scattered village centres. Larger plots, more mature native hedging, further from the riverside than the town proper.

Conservation areas across Gravesham

Gravesham Borough Council lists 23 conservation areas in total, covering most of the historic cores of Gravesend and Northfleet plus the outlying villages named above. Any tree over 75mm at chest height inside one needs six weeks' notice to the council under section 211 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 before work starts. Full CA rules explainer.
