What I do
Specified for heavy clay soils, the wind that comes off the Thames on the higher, more exposed ground, and the 23 conservation areas that cover much of Gravesend and Northfleet's Victorian and Edwardian core. Hedge cutting and reduction for the boundary; pruning, crown thinning, raising, reduction and deadwooding for the mature trees behind it.
Annual or twice-yearly cuts on privet, laurel, hawthorn, beech and the rest. Regular cadence, clean lines, all arisings cleared.
See pricing & timingBringing overgrown Victorian-terrace hedges back into proportion, the mature laurel and Leylandii screens on Darnley Road and Overcliffe that sit right on the 2m High Hedges line.
How I reduce safelyPruning, crown thinning, crown raising, crown reduction and deadwooding on the mature trees behind the hedge. Riverside wind-load and ash dieback assessed as part of every quote. TPO and conservation-area notice handled for you.

Why local matters
Many Gravesham gardens have heavy clay soil, waterlogged through winter and prone to cracking open in a dry summer, a genuinely different planting problem to sandy or chalky ground. Prevailing wind is westerly and south-westerly, but the exposed, higher ground around Windmill Hill on the north side of town sees noticeably harder wind than the sheltered valley streets below it, and that is usually what decides whether a new hedge establishes cleanly or needs staking through its first two winters.
I work to that reality, not against it. Hornbeam, hawthorn and privet where clay waterlogs through winter. Beech kept to the better-drained plots up towards Windmill Hill rather than the wettest ground. Native hawthorn on the hedgerow-style field boundaries out towards Higham and Meopham. And a tape measure on any stem approaching the 75mm conservation-area threshold before I touch it.
Inside a conservation area?
Gravesham has 23 designated conservation areas covering most of Gravesend and Northfleet's Victorian and Edwardian core plus the surrounding villages. Any tree with a stem over 75mm at 1.5m from the ground needs six weeks' written notice to Gravesham Borough Council before pruning. I file the section-211 notice on your behalf, included in every quote.
